Desktop platforms and system requirements

A system requirement is a statement by a developer about the machines they have tested and intend to support. This entry explains how to read one, how to check your own computer against it, and what an unsupported operating system really means.

Minimum, recommended, and the gap between them

Published requirements normally come in two columns. The minimum describes a configuration on which the game launches and runs at a low setting and a modest frame rate. The recommended describes what the developer considers a comfortable experience at higher settings. Neither is a promise. Both are measured on a clean installation, usually at a stated resolution, and usually without the browser tabs, chat programs and background updaters that occupy a real computer.

The useful way to read the pair is as a range rather than a pass mark. A machine that meets the minimum will run the game; whether it runs it well enough to enjoy in a twenty-minute battle where reaction timing matters is a different question. A machine sitting between the two columns is generally fine. A machine below the minimum may still start the game, but the developer has not tested that case and will not treat problems arising from it as bugs.

What each line of a requirement is actually about

Processor (CPU)
Handles the simulation, the interface and, in older engines, much of the drawing work. In games with large maps and many objects, a weak processor shows up as stuttering when a lot happens at once rather than as a uniformly low frame rate.
Graphics (GPU)
Draws the scene. This is the component that determines whether you can raise resolution and detail settings. An integrated graphics chip — one built into the processor rather than a separate card — will often meet a minimum requirement and rarely a recommended one.
Memory (RAM)
Holds the game and everything else you have open. Falling short here produces long pauses as the system swaps data to disk, which is more disruptive in play than a slightly lower frame rate.
Storage
Two separate concerns: the space the installation needs, and the speed of the drive. A solid-state drive mainly shortens loading, and in a game where battles start on a timer, loading in before the match begins is worth having.
Operating system
The versions the developer builds and tests for. This line is a statement of support, not of technical possibility, and it is the one most often glossed over.
Connection
Online games need consistency more than raw speed. A stable connection with low variation in latency produces a better experience than a fast one that fluctuates.

Checking your own machine

On Windows, open Settings, then System, then About. That screen lists the processor, installed memory and the Windows edition and version. For graphics, open Task Manager, choose the Performance tab, and look at the GPU entry, which names the adapter and its dedicated memory. On macOS, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu: the panel names the chip or processor, memory, and the macOS version, and the System Information button reveals the graphics details.

Write down six things before you compare anything: operating system and version, processor model, installed memory, graphics adapter, free disk space, and whether the drive is solid-state or mechanical. With those six, any published requirement can be checked in a couple of minutes.

Why Linux is frequently excluded

Many free-to-play games publish clients for Windows and macOS and state plainly that Linux is not supported. The reason is rarely hostility to the platform. It is that supporting an operating system means testing against it, shipping updates for it and answering support requests about it, and that the anti-cheat systems these games rely on are deeply tied to the operating systems they were built for.

Compatibility layers exist and often work. They are still an unsupported configuration, and the consequences are practical rather than theoretical: an update can break the game with no obligation on anyone to fix it, and an anti-cheat component may refuse to run or may treat the environment as suspicious. If a programme states that Linux is not supported, the honest reading is that a Linux machine is not a safe basis for investing time in an account.

The same logic applies to virtual machines, remote desktop sessions and cloud desktops. Where anti-cheat software is involved, an environment the developer has not sanctioned can result in a failed launch or a restricted account, regardless of whether anything improper was intended.

Download size, data and distance

Clients in this genre are large — tens of gigabytes is ordinary — and they patch regularly, sometimes weekly. On an unlimited fixed connection that is an evening’s wait. On a metered plan, a mobile hotspot or a satellite service, it is a cost worth calculating before starting, and it recurs with every major update.

Distance matters too. Latency is governed by physical distance and routing, so a player in Australia connecting to a server in another region will see noticeably higher latency than one connecting locally, no matter how fast the connection is. Where a game offers regional servers, the choice usually happens at account creation, and it determines both responsiveness and which players you meet in an evening. Checking which regions a game serves, before creating the account, avoids a problem that is awkward to undo afterwards.

Common questions

Will a game of this kind run on a laptop with integrated graphics?

Often yes, at low settings and a modest frame rate, provided the laptop meets the other lines of the minimum requirement. Integrated graphics rarely reach a recommended specification. Check the developer's published requirement against your own adapter rather than relying on a general answer.

Is Linux supported?

In this category it frequently is not, and the advertising programme for the game covered in this library states that Linux is not supported. Compatibility layers may run an unsupported client, but updates and anti-cheat components can break that arrangement at any time, with no support available.

How much disk space should I allow?

Allow the installation size stated by the developer plus a healthy margin, because patches need working space and the installed size grows over time. A drive that is nearly full also slows the whole system down.

Does a faster internet connection improve my aim?

No. Aiming is affected by latency and by how much that latency varies, not by download speed. A stable connection with consistent latency is more valuable than a faster one that fluctuates, which is why a wired connection is usually preferable to wireless for play.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?
